EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
