Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Top Spot.

On the surface, this work might appear closer to a challenging scholarly quiz rather than the latest pop album from a musician who just had a previous single featured a global pop icon. Broken into 4 separate movements and performed in 13 languages, we have a head-spinning orchestral-influenced album investigating female mystique, religious ascent, and corporal transformation, frequently via the perspective of various saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—is shot heavenward here, supported by the lush sound of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter among a long list of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone renders the efforts of other pop stars look rather modest.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to transcend dry academic chin-stroking feels nearly a miracle, and complete praise going to Rosalía. While it's not her first project to blend the past and the present, the scale feel far greater on Lux, with the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that really elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Similar to the legendary artist at her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart apart, the listener still desire to stay right there for the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during a stunning Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The track immediately shifts to the wild single driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic with this album is that you rarely quite know—nor wish to predict—where it is going to next."

Almost each track finishes at a totally distinct point than how it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a delicate symphony before collapsing in digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her previous rhythmic style begins off moody and sinister, featuring menacing beats, until sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Between Art & Accessibility

A key achievement on Lux is navigating the line between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. This is no surprise that it has achieved her first work to crack the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to collect increasingly infectious hooks as it spins upward. This feat gets repeated on a different expansive ballad that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals have a sharp smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux is pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its own built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that takes time to completely explore but doesn't seem like hard work. Where some big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish banquet where the characters at it, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flutter between conversations about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day musical from music's truly restlessly creative visionary.
