Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such medications should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural management.
