The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
