The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
