Weather Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Closed Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
No fewer than 11 of the weather balloons, carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.

Aviation Problems

The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.

Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

International Illegal Trade

Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."

Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."

European Tensions

These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.

Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
