Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
